Supported by a team of mechanical and electrical engineers, Broomfield designs and manufactures transformer winding machines and coil winding machines, developing each system from initial concept through production-ready builds.
Founded in 1948 and based in Leominster, Massachusetts, Broomfield expanded its operations in 2021 through the acquisition of Thermoplastics Engineering Corporation. Today, the company operates more than 85,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space.

The Challenge
The company had recently experienced a surge in production demand, driving rapid growth with forecasts indicating even greater expansion in the years ahead. To support this growth, the company needed to add additional large work cells, which consumed a significant amount of valuable floor space. Faced with the challenge of increasing storage capacity without expanding its footprint, the company needed a solution that could maximize available space. Having already seen success with its existing Hanel Storage Unit, the company turned to BODE to explore the addition of two more units.
While the company had identified a location for the two new Hanel units, the space presented several challenges. The area was partially obstructed by an existing mezzanine, and a site evaluation revealed that the floor could not safely support the weight of the units and their contents.
In addition, electrical service needed to be routed to the area to power the units. These challenges required a coordinated solution to ensure the installation could be completed safely and effectively.
The Solution
To create space for the new Hanel units, a section of the existing mezzanine was modified to accommodate the installation. A new concrete pad was also poured and allowed to fully cure to ensure it could safely support the weight of the units and their contents.
In addition, electrical service was extended to the installation area, and an existing HVAC unit was relocated to provide the necessary clearance. These modifications allowed the customer to install the Hanel units in their desired location while maximizing both storage capacity and available floor space.

Design & Planning
During the discovery and planning phase, the BODE team worked closely with Broomfield to fully understand their goals, requirements, and expectations for the project. Through a series of meetings, phone calls, emails, and ongoing discussions, both teams collaborated to identify storage needs, space constraints, operational requirements, and future growth considerations.
This continuous communication ensured that every detail was carefully reviewed before moving forward. By taking the time to evaluate options, address potential challenges, and align on project objectives, BODE was able to develop a solution tailored to Broomfield’s specific needs while minimizing surprises during installation.

Pre-Installation Phase:
Site Preparation & Shipping
Before installation could begin, the site needed to be prepared to accommodate the new Hanel units. To ensure the area was ready, the HVAC equipment and electrical service were relocated, and a new reinforced concrete pad was poured to safely support the weight of the units and their stored inventory.
After arriving to the port in Boston, the units were transported to Broomfield’s facility in Leominster, where the materials were carefully unloaded, organized, and staged in preparation for installation.
Coordinating the delivery of large, specialized equipment requires careful planning to keep the project on schedule. By ensuring every component arrived safely and was organized upon delivery, the installation team was able to begin work efficiently once the site was ready.

Installation Phase:
Installation of Equipment
With the site prepared and the equipment delivered, the installation phase got underway. Over the course of approximately two weeks, BODE’s in-house installation technicians, supported by an on-site project manager, worked together to coordinate and complete the installation of both units.
Throughout the project, the team carefully planned each step to minimize disruptions to Broomfield’s day-to-day operations. Once the installation was complete, the units were thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and prepared for immediate use, delivering a true turnkey solution that was ready to support the customer’s operation from day one.
